SEEDS CARE GUIDE

How to Plant & Care for Dahlia Seeds

Dahlia seeds are an exciting way to grow unique, one-of-a-kind flowers—each plant may bloom in different shapes and colours! To get started, sow seeds indoors in trays or small pots 6–8 weeks before your last frost. Use a light, well-draining seed-raising mix, and press the seeds gently into the surface—just lightly cover them with soil. Keep them warm (about 20–22°C) and moist, and they should sprout in 5–10 days.

Once the seedlings have a few sets of true leaves, you can pot them up into larger containers. When all risk of frost has passed, harden them off by gradually introducing them to the outdoors over a week. Then plant them out in a sunny spot with rich, well-drained soil, spacing them about 30cm apart. Water regularly, feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every few weeks, and pinch out the tips when they’re about 20–30cm tall to encourage bushier plants. By summer, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful blooms—and maybe even some tubers to dig up and save!
